Post Office could pay social grants next year

CAPE TOWN - The South African Post Office could be paying out social grants next year as the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) looks to phase out its reliance on Cash Paymaster Services (CPS).

Sassa officials, led by CEO Thokozani Magwaza, are briefing Parliament's standing committee on public accounts on the implementation of a Constitutional Court order.

The current CPS contract declared illegal by the court, runs until April 2018.

Sassa officials told MPs they’ll be meeting with officials on Wednesday to thrash out a plan for future payments.

Magwaza says Sassa wants to determine what services the Post Office can provide.

MPs were, however, not pleased by the absence of a clear plan.

African National Congress MP Mnyamezeli Booi said: “We have expectations. Our people are not going to be held ransom between yourself and CPS. We are going to be on your case every week.”

Sassa says a full plan and costing will be revealed next week.
