Hawks deny claims it’s investigating Jonas for corruption

JOHANNESBURG – The Hawks have denied allegations the unit is investigating Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas for corruption.

The City Press reported over the weekend the Hawks are gathering evidence that could implicate Jonas in a case of corruption involving a supplier to South African Airways (SAA)’s aviation maintenance division.

However, the unit’s Hangwani Mulaudzi says Jonas has not been implicated.

“There’s an investigation that involves billions of rand at SAA and that investigation will only be determined as to who is involved once we continue with it. But to say that the deputy minister of finance or anybody is attached to it, I think is unethical and wrong.”

The paper said there are allegations the deputy minister used his political influence to have a United States aircraft maintenance and engineering company favourably viewed as a supplier of aircraft components and tyres.

Mulaudzi confirmed that the corruption investigation into SAA has been ongoing since last year, but says it’s not directed to Jonas.
