JOHANNESBURG - Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba has attributed growing tourism numbers to South Africa’s relative safety compared to some European countries which experienced terrorist attacks.

The minister was speaking at the release of the festive season traveler statistics in Pretoria on Wednesday.

Gigaba says apart from South Africa’s attractions, tourists feel a sense of security.

“People feel safe and comfortable coming here. This is why we think that we’ve seen a gradual increase in tourist numbers.”

He says border movements over the festive season increased by nearly 4%.

Gigaba also announced the allocation of R25 million to employ more custom officials at OR Tambo International Airport.
