CAPE TOWN - Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan says 2017 will be a politically and economically challenging year.

The minister has delivered the keynote address at the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa’s (Numsa) 10th national congress.

Gordhan has highlighted the effect of Brexit on the South African economy and has also emphasised the importance of boosting government's revenue collection.

Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim addressed the audience and the Finance Minister, highlighting his dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the country.

“As things stand, we think this country is really taking a wrong direction and these rating agencies in our view cannot be our advisers.”

Gordhan elaborated on efforts by government to alleviate poverty and grow the economy, but emphasised the importance of key sectors in society joining hands to achieve this.

“There are ways in which, if we solve some of the problems we have together and transform our economy in the right kind of way, we can actually have much higher growth.”

Delegates are also set to vote for Numsa’s national office bearers later on Monday.
