Ramaphosa an enemy of the working class, says Numsa

JOHANNESBURG - Metalworkers union National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) says it’s disgusted that Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) has decided to endorse Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa to take over as leader of the African National Congress (ANC), saying he’s an enemy of the working class.

On Thursday, labour federation Cosatu announced it was breaking ranks and rallying behind Ramaphosa, because it was under pressure to take a position.

The federation said that Ramaphosa was the best candidate to take over from President Jacob Zuma.

Numsa says that Ramaphosa has consistently attacked workers’ hard-won gains and defended the interests of the exploiting capitalist class.

The union is shocked by Cosatu’s decision to back Ramaphosa, saying he recently supported legislation to maintain poverty wages.

It says that as a former director at Lonmin, Ramaphosa called for concomitant action at Marikana, which led to the death of 34 miners.

Last year, teachers’ union South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) called on Cosatu to support Ramaphosa as a matter of principal.

The federation initially reprimanded the union and warned it against discussing who should be elected president of the ANC.

On Thursday, Cosatu announced that it had taken a stand and would support the deputy president.
