JOHANNESBURG - Founder of the Decolonisation Foundation and former government official Mzwanele Manyi says he knows for a fact that government does have enough money to fund free quality education but it is Treasury's fault for lacking the political will.

Speaking to Eyewitness News on the sidelines of a gala dinner hosted by Ekurhuleni Mayor Mzwandile Masina at the weekend, Manyi says there is enough money in the system to pay for free education for all.

He says that through the Decolonisation Foundation he has reported billions of rands which have been inefficiently used.

Manyi says government has enough capital to fund free university education.

"I know that there's enough money in the system. If you look at the fruitless and wasteful expenditure that the Auditor-General keeps talking about, billions of rands."

He says that ultimately, National Treasury holds the public purse but it is lacking the political will, which he says may disturb the economic status quo.

"As the current system of a colonial system, what you want is uneducated Africans so that you can exploit them, that's what you want. Now if everyone is going to run around with a degree it's going to be difficult to have cheap labour. So this is all there to ensure cheap labour."

Manyi says he believes the problem could be solved overnight if government shows the political will.
