JOHANNESBURG - Former Cosatu general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says they are three weeks away from launching and announcing the name of a new labour federation, saying a strong and militant workers' movement is necessary now more than ever.
Vavi, who is the convener of the new federation, was briefing the media following a steering committee's meeting to form the organisation.
He says the idea of a new federation will soon be a reality in the country.
"They are engaging on what should be the name and should be the logos of the new federation. We are breaking new grounds."
He says the federation's Constitution has already been written.
"The new Constitution is based on a number of fundamental principles including the independence of trade unions, the worker controlled principle and accountability."
Vavi says while the federation will politically and organisationally defend the interests of the working class, it won't be affiliated to any political party.
