Greenpoint Fan Walk is packed as festival goers take in the sights and sounds.
Thousands of people have lined Somerset Road, eager to see the dazzling floats.
Mayor Patricia de Lille, who cut the ribbon to start the procession, says the carnival puts Cape Town on the map as South Africa’s event capital.
With floats as tall as eight metres, bare chested, oiled up firefighters, vibrant dancers of all ages and busy food and craft markets, this carnival could easily be the biggest event on Cape Town’s 2015 calendar.
